So the UK elections are in full swing and once again we are subjected to loads of promises about how the relevant party will spend our hard earned taxes…..
My question is this: does anyone actually believe anything they say?
Considering past history and how very quickly they change their tune and how often their memory fails after they get into power….is there any use believing one single campaign promise? Of any party?
And since this is being touted as the ‘Brexit’ election….Let’s remember, if you will, just how many lies Boris Johnson told in order to get himself into the position of Prime Minister (and still does). Does anyone in this country still believe any electioneering promises he makes?
I’m going to be in England for the election and am intrigued as to what will happen next! it’s actually my birthday on the day of the vote so I’m sure there’ll be a party or two! Love seeing my Grandma quote up there on your page 🙂
Oh brilliant. Yes, it’s quite a circus really. When I first came to the UK in 2001 I found the whole political process entirely fascinating, completely different from South Africa. But over the last 18 years I’ve become so disillusioned by the endless campaign promises that seldom translate into reality. Each party trashes the other and they openly slander one another and yet it’s all in a day’s work and the wheels grind on, promises soon forgotten…I’m in a real quandary as I have no idea who to vote for. I feel like moving to Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon is the only person I have any admiration for 😂😂😂 Many happy birthday wishes for the 12th and I hope you have a wonderful day. How long are you here for? Quality time with the baby I’m sure. Yes, I’m enjoying it too, I’m reluctant to post another image coz then it will disappear 😉
Thanks! We are staying for 2 months so looking forward to lots of quality time with Dottie 🙂
Oh that’s wonderful. Well I wish you a fantastic stay
Thank you for this insightful and informative post! I have recently published an article on my blog about the UK election and it’s impact from an outsider’s perspective. If you have time, it would be great if you could check out my post as I would be really interested to hear your thoughts! Thanks 🙂 – https://thelevinelowdown.com/2019/12/13/boris-johnsons-victory/
Hi. Thanks for visiting and sharing your article. Sadly the election has given Johnson carte blanche to ride roughshod over any of the country’s challenges. There is nothing good about his election and he’s a serial and shameless liar. Corbyn should have stood down 3 years ago and the Labour Party is a failure due to his stubbornness. I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but he’s not a leader. Brexit is an unmitigated disaster and is going to negatively affect this country and the future generations for decades to come. Populism is a nasty matter and Johnson and that snake farage have opened pandora’s box with their nasty rhetoric and lies. Lies that decades of mindless soap operas and reality shows on TV have dulled into stupidity. These people don’t think, they can’t reason and they certainly have not educated themselves. I’m horribly disappointed that the Torys are still in government. There’s nothing good to be said about their policies.
Thank you for your comment and sharing your perspective with me. It seems like the ‘left’ have collapsed in all Western democracies recently, leaving an inherently less popular right to easily take control. It’s funny how this all works. Regardless, do you think Johnson is better than having the UK wait in a period of uncertainty for many more years to come if Corbyn won the election? Is there any hope after Brexit that you can find?
Hi. You’re welcome. I agree totally that the left have indeed collapsed to a large extent in most western countries, I believe due to it being watered down. There are too many ‘democratic’ parties and the conservatives are stronger for it. Johnson is not a good option under any circumstances and history will not look kindly on him in years to come. It was due to his conservative colleagues, David Cameron and George Osborne and the nasties of the ERG that we’re in the Brexit mess, and it is a mess. It was sold on a lie and misinformation and false promises. The only people who are going to benefit will be the hedge-fund managers and their investors. Unfortunately, too many people are still living in the past and think we’re still an empire (and I’m not exaggerating that point, I’ve heard people use the word in interviews), and believe we can just click our fingers and the world will come running…we’re not. We’re a tiny island off the coast of a large continent and many people are going to be in for a rude awakening in the months and years to come. I agree that with JC (?) in the driving seat (sitting on the fence) we’d be going nowhere quickly, but there’s nothing good about Brexit that I can see. The US are going to nail us to the wall with hard trade deals, and why not…our population is not even a quarter of theirs. They need us less than we need them. China is buying up countries left right and centre….under the guise of investment 😡😡 and our biggest trading bloc is right next door. The people who pushed for this are going to rub their hands together with glee, count their money in their ivory towers and walk away never to look back whilst millions are going to be left to suffer in their wake…they already do. Like all ‘right wing’ parties, the Tories are brutal and many many people have already suffered for their policies. The UK today is not the UK I loved so much when I first arrived…and I despair. If there was a good strong leader in Labour, we might have a chance at the next election, but with the exception of 2 people who have not yet thrown their hats into the ring, there is no-one who stands out (male or female), we don’t stand a chance of winning a vote. Personally I’m a Green Party voter, but the world is not yet ready for that type of government. There are changes in some countries, but it won’t happen in my lifetime. I think we’re in a ‘red’ phase and won’t see the end of it for decades. Too much racism, bigotry and lack of compassion mixed with the me me me society of mindless soap operas and reality TV shows, for change to happen quickly. It’s like the bad news/ good news scenario…people thrive on negative drama and anger…when that changes, then things will get better again. (Sorry for the verbal barrage 😂😂😂🤪)
Oh, and yes, there is hope after Brexit, but not for the majority….
