So, here I am just under a week since I made the momentous decision to close down my business!   Yesterday morning and this morning I had a major panic-attack…a real wobbly and almost reconsidered the whole thing…..except that of course nothing has changed. The reasons for disconnecting myself from the business of 3 Days in London are still the same and much as I loved my business and loved being identified as 3 Days in London…it became me and I lost myself in the process.

Roughly 4.5 years ago I designed an itinerary for an American friend who was coming to London and wanted my suggestions on what to do with 6 hours in London…Out of that I started a new business called 3 Days in London and spent days and hours in London charting new routes and created 3 full-day itineraries ‘3 Days in London’ that would take in all the top attractions as well as many of the hidden and secret London places that are so amazing and yet so many visitors to our incredible city never get to see. I started a new website, got onto twitter, opened a facebook page, started a pinterest profile, opened a flickr account, got going on instagram soon after it appearedinstagram and signed onto so many social media platforms that I totally lost count. After years of steadily tweeting, blogging and posting photos and providing what I hoped was interesting information about the city; the history, hidden places, events, races and exhibitions I started to get invitations to Press Previews….. finally I was being noticed and was now going to the openings of new exhibitions…wow!!!   I can’t tell you how delighted and thrilled and amazed I was when I got my first invitation: to the opening of a new exhibition at the Tower of London.

Around the same time I created and had an App built….it was/is great. To date there have been almost 3,000 downloads and of course bearing in mind it’s free to download, it was still exciting nonetheless to see the download numbers creeping up!

I adore London; it really was my passion and of course having learned via the Personal Development journey I was on in 2007/2008 that to start a business by doing what you loved was the best way to ‘Turn Passion into Profit’ (I am part quoting the title of a book by Christopher Howard) I decided to turn my love of London into a business. However….and this is a big however….that did not happen. I got so wrapped up in trying to be the ‘google of London’ that although my love for London never waned, my passion has.

I’ve seen the Queen and the Royal Family, been at the Royal Wedding, the Diamond Jubilee, was at the gate of Buckingham Palace when our future king was born

waiting for the arrival of a future king...

waiting for the arrival of a future king…

watched numerous Trooping the Colour events, been rowed along the Thames in the beautiful Trinity Tide (the 1st),

The Trinity Tide…not the year I got to ride 😉

participated in the Tudor Pull twice, stood on the Gloriana (a highlight), been to watch the arrival of ‘The First Georgian king’,

The Glorious Georges

climbed the O2, been up the Orbit and had numerous rides on the London Eye and walked 80% of the streets, courts and lanes in the City of London.

The City of London

The City of London

I’ve climbed The Monument (3 times), climbed to the Golden Gallery of St Paul’s (5 or 6 times) & the tower of Westminster Cathedral, been up The Shard, down the Tube (travelled on every line and visited nearly all the stations),

Going underground...

Going underground…

I’ve sailed down the Thames in various craft including a tall-ship, and over the Thames in the cable car, walked beneath the Thames via the Greenwich tunnel and tramped along the beaches wherever possible. I’ve been to both the London locks, walked across every bridge from Hampton Court to Tower Bridge, watched all the river races, explored and investigated nooks and crannies, learned to drink a lager: London Pride (go figure hahahaha) and pulled a pint at The George Inn.

I became a tad obsessed with trying to see and do EVERYTHING, and go everywhere; visit every palace (which I have done), explore every historical house (still a few to go), attend every exhibition, every attraction, visit every ‘views of London’ (I’ve done most), visit all the churches in City of London and Westminster and many more besides (only a few to go), all the parks (still many to go), all the events (been to all the annual ones!!).

I’ve seen the Lord Mayor’s Show (5 times), and watched the fireworks at the London Eye at 5 New Year’s nights and stayed out all night in 2014, seen the tree being switched on in Trafalgar Square. I’ve tried to visit every hidden place, every secret place, visit all the famous cemeteries (3 to go), go on as many tours of different areas as possible, learn about the many kings and queens, about the famous

and infamous people who had shaped the city and all this while taking thousands of photos – to date I have over 60,000!!   Ironically I missed quite a lot of the events taking place in front of me in my endeavour to capture the ‘perfect’ photo or the ‘best’ video to share, to share them without overwhelming the social media platforms….all this while trying to blog about everything I had done, update the App (which, like a baby, needs constant attention) and still work and have a life…..in the process I forgot about me, in my desire to do everything and to share everything I knew about the city I exhausted myself, sometimes staying up till 3am in the morning and back at my desk by 6am setting tweets, updating the blog (some posts took anything up to 8 hours to craft in my need to have the full and correct information), editing and uploading photos etc etc etc…..London is such an amazing place and I became quite obsessed with trying to make sure that I didn’t miss anything (not possible) and share everything…..which of course is impossible.

seeing everything....

seeing everything….

I tried to learn about SEO, key words and phrases, back-links, how to craft a blog to make it interesting, I bought books and downloaded ‘useful information’, I gathered boxes and boxes of flyers, leaflets, brochures all carefully collated into categories and alphabetical order for easy access when doing research, and dozens of books on London – all this stuff, except for the books, are now in the recycling bin along with a little bit of my heart!! 😦

my London books

some of my London books

I downloaded articles on how to write a Press release, how to do this, how to do that, what to do and what not to do when writing a blog…..gahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! I tried to figure out the best time to send tweets, to update the facebook page, upload photos to pinterest, when was the best time to post a blog…..and on and on and on……the ‘experts’ all had an idea of what/when/how was best…and I had no idea who was the best expert.

Amongst all this madness I decided to redesign my website; to make it into a super duper resource….a place where people could visit and easily find out everything (almost) there is to do and see in the city. Lists of things to do, places to visit, Top attractions, what to see, museums and galleries, churches, places, parks and gardens and squares, annual events and and and….lists and lists and more lists…..you don’t want to miss a thing!   One thing about me….I LOVE lists!!!  I have spent months and months researching, learning and crafting interesting and useful (I hope) articles for the website….all of which I would now have said is wasted time….

down the toilet....

down the toilet….

I met with the website designer at the beginning of the year and the first draft was beautiful..I got so excited. Now I would be able to confidently upload the itineraries I had created 4 years ago (nope, I had not yet put them up…despite walking them a number of times and having other people test them for me, lack of confidence stopped me at every turn, what if the information that was on the itinerary was incorrect!! What if they didn’t like them). I planned that once the website was completed I would approach possible sponsors for the App etc. I wanted to be taken seriously, to have a professional website, to show I was serious. So when things started to go awry with the development of the new website, I started to get concerned. Time and months went by with no indication of when it would be ready…finally I started to put the pressure on. I eventually got a link, clicked on it and was sent to a porn site….apparently my new website along with 4 others had been hacked. I won’t go into the subsequent details except to say that by now my confidence in the end result was beginning to wane….why didn’t the developer have sufficient security?

pretty much says it all really..

pretty much says it all really..

After many emails and phone calls, many of which went unanswered and quite a few months went by, I finally got a link to the site……suffice to say I was dismayed…I was shocked at quite frankly what looked to me like something that had hastily been cobbled together to meet my demands (after nearly 7 months) and in that split second I was…right that’s it!!! I’ve had enough. I’m out!!!!

hmmm....

hmmm….

There was so much that was fundamentally wrong and although my initial list of errors only took into account the big stuff I had discovered that was incorrect, the fact that the name of the company had been spelled incorrectly in not one but two places really upset me a lot…..the response I got from the developer of ‘quick fix’ or ‘easy change’ just didn’t after all cut the mustard. This had come right on top of the double whammy of the day before and I really just couldn’t take it in. I didn’t want to see so many errors on what really should have been a professional presentation…..TIME to quit!

time to quit!

time to quit!

The reality is that I am a very small fish in the very big London pond….there are HUGE London websites that employ dozens of people to research, report and update their websites….the enormity of what I was trying to do finally hit me square between the eyeballs….my love-affair was over.    Not with London, but with the business of London.

I had lost my passion for the city, I was exhausted with trying to be everywhere and do everything and tweet, instagram, facebook, flickr, pinterest and write about it. I was tired of trying to get stats that I needed, to learn about the different platforms that keep changing their algorithms, facebook changed theirs so often I got heart-palpitations trying to keep up….. and layouts; don’t even talk to me about layouts!!!…I got heartily sick of logging onto a platform that I had used just the day before and the whole appearance had changed and I had to learn all over again where to find things. I seriously believe that the developers are too clever for their own good and should not be allowed anywhere near the platform once it’s done! I got fed up with all the spam that appeared on my blog every day (despite having akismet installed), with nasty people making shitty comments or complaining about my tweets on twitter, or spending hours editing and uploading photos, or creating videos and only 5 or 6 people even liked them. I also had to tackle bloody Windows 8 along the way after my previous computer crashed and I had to get a new one…it has also cost me a lot financially. I had to stop and really question why I was still doing this.

& what am I doing?

& what am I doing?

On the plus side, I did get to conduct a few guided walks with groups of people, bespoke walks that were fun to research, fun to plan and in reality quite tiring to do. I was terrified that they would get injured in some or another way while on the walk with me and frankly even having insurance doesn’t cover that stress. I’ve written a short story…my great Victorian novel I like to call it…LOL in reality it’s a short story, but it was fun to write and I actually sold quite a few, I’ve created 2 blurb books, one my daughter made for me out of some of my more interesting blogs and one I made for a friend who visited Twickenham, and I have been to so many places, seen so many amazing things, visited so many fantastic venues and attended some brilliant events and exhibitions. I have connected with some absolutely wonderful people along the way… some from as far away as Russia and Ukraine, Toronto in Canada, Texas, California, Florida, and other American states; some of whom I have actually met, many of whom have become very very good friends 😉 as well as wonderful people from the UK and London.  These are just a few of the wonderful people I have met….

On this amazing journey I discovered that not only was Queen Lizzie’s birthday close to mine, but my birthday falls on St George’s Day and I share the same birth date as Shakespeare!!  How cool is that!

I have learned so much about the history of this great city, the greatest city on the planet in my humble opinion, that I can only look back with great joy at all I have done and the people I have met and I can tell you one thing for sure….okay make that two things…I Love London, that will never wane and I know more about this city than I know about ANYTHING else on the planet!!!

when a man is tired of London......

when a man is tired of London……

I LOVE London, but, I am no longer trying to be ‘google for London…..’queen_elizabeth

hello!!!! I’m back!! 🙂 Yes, Unbelievably, I have been away for so long but now I’m back.  Life has given me another fork in the road and as usual you can only go in one direction, so here I am…..back on my original road…..

Last week, on one day, the Universe decided to throw me a double whammy of bad news and also a break down in communication regarding the future of my business.

As as result of that I decided to shut down my facebook profile,

way out.....

way out…..

close down my business and give up the lease on the house I have been sharing with my daughter for the last 3 years. She has been desperate to have her own place and only been staying here because she was worried about me.  When I moved in 3 years ago it was meant to be for 6 months……we got way too comfortable and frankly it suited us both at the time….but she is so ready to have her own place….so since I have now decided to go off exploring again, she is free to head off and find her own place.

a new direction....

a new direction….

So, from here on in I will be blogging more regularly and travelling again 🙂 Hooray!

Going back a bit……the reason for my sudden change of direction came about because of three things:

1) After many years of unexplained and many times severe blackouts, my daughter’s Cardiologist tells her that the probable reason for the severe blackouts is that her heart keeps stopping….yeah…I kid you not. It seems she has in fact had a near-death experience just recently and last year when I discovered her unresponsive and despite slapping, shouting and shaking her, still got no response, her heart had in fact stopped.   Thankfully I did just keep hitting, shouting and shaking her coz after a short while she came around and we whisked off to hospital……so lets hope they find a way of sorting this out.

2) the bastard ex-husband who told her that he wanted children but not with her has only gone and not only got the house he denied her, but remarried and had a child. To say that I was filled with fury would be an understatement.  She has struggled for over 4 years now to come to terms with his wretched treatment of her and the horrible stuff she found out after she left and now he has the audacity to go and have a child while she is struggling to get back on her feet emotionally.  There should be a way of dealing with people like him.

3) I’ve been working on the 3 Days in London business for 4.5 years now, building credibility, learning about London, creating a website, building a twitter following, writing books, building an App and providing as much information to visitors as possible… and the next step was the redesigned website….which when I finally got the link, what the website developer had done was so not up to scratch that I bloody nearly freaked…actually I lie….I did freak.  So that little piece of joy came round about the time I heard the above 2 items…so all three things in a short space of time and I am like OKAY!!! universe that’s enough bullsh!t. time for a change 😉

They always say that things come in threes

things always come in three's

things always come in three’s

So the long and the short of it is that we are now definitely giving up the lease on the house, my daughter is finally going to find a place of her own near the coast which she has been wanting to do for a few years now and I am going to pack my life up in boxes, start working full time again so I can sort out my debt and then I am going to buy the campervan/caravan that I have been wanting for ever such a long time and go travelling.

...time to travel....

…time to travel….

Time to become a nomad once again.

So keep your eye on this blog and keep up with my new adventures. I will of course still blog about London……I adore London and it will always be in my blood.

So as the sun goes down on my current life, so it will rise again on the new….

I am a member of http://www.avaaz.org/en/ and often sign their petitions, the ones that I feel most strongly about. I repost these on facebook (sadly with very little response, and apparently it annoys some people) but at least I try.  I receive the avaaz emails (amongst others) on a regular basis and this one (see below in italics) popped into my inbox yesterday.  I am appalled at the fact that we as humans, and supposedly the Guardians of the Planet are the ones that are destroying it.   One of the most heart-breaking of these are the orangutans in countries like Borneo, whose habitat is being systematically destroyed by palm-oil plantations…….and all because we as consumers use the products that contain palm oil….it’s in so many of our food and cosmetic products, it’s frightening.

The result of this is that the habitat of the orangutan, and thousands of other creatures who call these jungles home and depend on them for their survival, are being destroyed…..hectares by the minute.   80% of the jungles in Borneo have already been destroyed!! This is horrendous. And this is our doing and we ARE responsible.  Yes, it’s the large corporations that plant/buy the palm oil and manufacture the products that contain them, but we are the ones that buy the stuff!!  We are responsible.  If we stop buying products with palm oil, then the corporations will be forced to reconsider their strategy.  Anyway, at least 70% of products on the shelves at the supermarket today is unnecessary to our survival.   We just blindly buy, buy, buy…taken in by, and fools to clever marketing and advertising.  If the large corporations used the billions they spend each year on advertising, on helping to save our wildlife, our planet would be a much better place.  It’s our demands for more than spurs them on to make more and more products that we don’t need and fill their bank accounts with the profits they get from our blind consumerism.  If they started destroying the ancient forests in Britain to plant palm oil there would be a huge outcry with people marching on parliament, waving placards and demonstrating against the destruction….and yet we have the audacity to condone and accept it being done in other countries (you condone it by buying the products, don’t try wriggle out of the responsibility).

There’s a crucial corridor connecting two essential orangutan habitats in the wetlands of Borneo that is on the brink of destruction. Saving this land could be the difference between life and death for countless orangutans, who need continuous swaths of forest and trees to survive.

I have pledged £24.00 enough to protect up to 1568 square meters (a very small portion of Borneo jungle) – if I had more I would contribute more.  And I am not telling you this to pat myself on the back, but merely to make a point… Every penny/pound/dollar/whatever currency you have will help.  Surely it’s not too much to ask….and if they don’t raise enough, then avaaz have pledged to not take the money from my account.   I may not be able to save the world, but I can make a tiny contribution towards helping these magnificent creatures to survive and give them a chance.  The £24 I have pledged is a weeks budget for food or 5x Costa Coffee & carrot cake…not a lot really.  And if they don’t manage to raise sufficient funds then I will donate that £24.00 to the Orangutan sanctuary http://www.savetheorangutan.org/ with whom I have already been communicating to that effect.

I am hoping that by posting this blog, I can reach someone else who is willing to make a small contribution towards saving the small corridor of jungle that will make all the difference to the orangutan but very little difference to our pockets. Unless you are out of work or in severe debt…then you’re excused 😉  I have also taken a pledge to NOT buy food or products that contain palm oil…..there isn’t very much really, so I have taken to buying only fresh foods and prepare from scratch.  Not only has this had an impact on my budget, but I have lost weight and feel a lot healthier….ironic innit!!  As for my cosmetics and cleaning stuff, I now only buy organic products and use them sparingly.  We can’t let these creatures die out on our watch!!!

The world’s orangutans are hanging on by a thread, with scientists warning we don’t have much time left before they’re extinct. Now there’s a brilliant plan that could save them, if we all chip in what we can.

There’s a crucial corridor connecting two essential orangutan habitats in the wetlands of Borneo that is on the brink of destruction. Saving this land could be the difference between life and death for countless orangutans, who need continuous swaths of forest and trees to survive. Conservation NGOs and local groups have fearlessly announced they will buy the land and protect it for good, but to do it they need enough money to beat out profit-hungry companies looking to move in and destroy it.

This is exactly the kind of moment the Avaaz community was made for — our unique, people-powered funding model could allow us to finance the crucial sanctuary quickly, and create a fund to defend other key pieces of land around the world. Pledge what you can, we’ll process the donations only if we raise enough to buy the land.

Body of the email: “Orangutans are some of our most intelligent, thoughtful relatives — their name means “person of the forest” in Malay. They spend 90% of their time roaming and climbing trees (the males can stretch their arms up to 7 feet!) — even sleeping high up in nests of leafy branches, and they use big leaves as umbrellas when it rains. So, as demand for palm oil skyrockets and companies rush to clear more and more land, their homes are literally falling like dominoes.

Allowing the world’s orangutans to die out would mean not only losing one of the planet’s most majestic creatures forever, but would also change the entire ecosystem of the rainforests they inhabit. As they roam the forest eating fruit, orangutans scatter the seeds far and wide, helping the entire forest stay healthy and robust.

In Borneo, where 80% of the orangutans’ habitat has already been destroyed, even a small area of land can make a massive difference as it can link together protected forests that have survived. That’s why this plan to save the orangutans is so powerful — by connecting a forest reserve with a wildlife sanctuary, we can get the most from every cent raised.”

Please could you make a pledge?  even as little as £3.00 will make a difference.

And in case you don’t believe me or even avaaz, here is some more reading for you:

It’s like the starfish on the beach, you may not be able to save them all, but it will make a difference to the one you throw back into the sea.

2013 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 13,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 5 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Okay so this post was actually started in May 2013!! But I have just not gotten round to posting it….so here goes….

spammers alert!! Right, here’s the thing. I noticed in the last few days (May 2013) that my followers on instagram had increased exponentially. At first I was thrilled and thought it was my scintillating personality :p Then something MichaelQT said yesterday made me take a closer look & hey ho, here we go!!! 99% spammers! urgh. such a waste of time..now I have to sit there and click on each one and report them for spam.

This has all the hallmarks of the Mark Anastasi/Milli Ponce software that they set up.   I went to one of his ‘free’ seminars last year and at first glance the idea seems terrific (won’t go into details, the seminar was 2 days long!) suffice to say they had developed a software system that with a bit of input from you (the people who paid out £20,000 for the software, training on how to set it up & the weekend at his house with a pool in Cyprus), this system would then autofollow people on twitter and repost ‘whatever’ links to a product or ‘whatever’ every time you mention a keyword post like ‘diet’ for instance.  Basically spamming.

Now its seems to have infested instagram! so here is a heads up of what the profile of a spammer looks like. false names, photos that ‘they’ have downloaded off the internet (we were taught it doesn’t have to be real, just so long as it looks real – typical ‘guru’ bullsh!t of the MLM type), thousands of ‘following’ very few ‘followers’ and invariably (on twitter hundreds of posts with nothing but links) and no conversation i.e. bots!. On closer inspection you will also notice that the name is usually a girls and the attendant photo is of a guy! or visa versa!

So although I can’t show you the instagram photos to give you an idea of what these spammer profiles look like, just have a look at their profiles before following back (same as for twitter) and then you can wish that the fleas of a 1,000 camels would infest their ars3s for being such pesky critters, but it won’t help…they are not real…except perhaps you could direct that wish onto the people who set this thing up in the first place. LOL!! So in summary, if you suddenly get hundreds of new followers on twitter and now (bugger it) on instagram…they are most likely fake.

p.s. the names of the people mentioned above are quite likely false as well, coz at the seminar/course we were told to create ourselves a false name for the internet. and (at the time) I had wasted 45 minutes of my precious time reporting spammers and posting this!   In closing, if you wondered where they get the time…we were told that you (the person who signed up for the course) would hire people in the Philippines for a nominal amount of money per month (and that we were doing them a great service by employing them!!) and they would manage the whole thing for you while you get rich!!! hmmm??

As I mentioned, I started this post nearly a year ago.  I have been remiss in actually posting it, but hope the info will be of use.  I also have no idea what has transpired in the life of the people who ran the course or whether they have done any further courses…suffice it to say, once I really looked into it, I realised that the system was essentially about spamming.  and needless to say I have distanced myself from the whole sorry lot.

A few years ago I had the great good fortune of listening to Dr Demartini speak at an event.  At the time I had some personal issues that I wanted to sort out, issues that I felt were holding me back in many ways.  I was so impressed by what he had to say that I signed up for the ‘Breakthrough Experience’, a 3 day course that he runs.  It was one of the hardest weekends of my life but also one of the most life-changing weekends.  This was during a period of time where I had a brain-storm (not to be confused with brain-wave…which is usually the precursor to something sensible) and signed up to just about every Personal Development course that was being held in London at that time (2007-2008), 9 months of madness that cost me a ruddy fortune.  Subsequent to that period of lunacy, I was left with a serious amount of debt and over a period of time….a healthy respect of Personal Development avoidance.

However, subsequent to that and because this particular course did in fact produce a positive outcome, Dr Demartini’s course was/is the only one I would ever recommend.  I signed up to his newsletters and follow his page on facebook.  I enjoy reading the information he sends and usually get some real learning out of it.  I received this in the mail a few days ago and thought I would share it with you as it is really profound….I hope he doesn’t mind 🙂 ( and in case he reads this (as if) no Dr D I am not putting you on a pedestal….I just really appreciate what you teach! 🙂 )

So here goes:

” The three words ‘I LOVE YOU’ can be for some the most challenging words to say and yet also the most commonly appreciated words for people to hear.

Many people hold back on sharing their love and appreciation for others because of a fear of rejection.
I often ask my clients what they would do if they were told they only had 24 hours to live. In all, if not most cases, they say they would make sure they used their last hours to say ‘Thank you, I love you’ to all of the people they feel contributed towards their lives.

At the core of every human being, we all just want to be loved and appreciated for who we are. So letting someone know that you love them is one of the most precious gifts you can give.

Whether Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day or Children’s Day, when it comes to those you love, find a way to share your appreciation and the truth of your heart.

When asked the best way to overcome the fear of saying ‘I love you’, I suggest the following:

Write down 25 benefits to you of your sharing the words ‘I love you’ with the person you wish to share your heart with, and then also write down 25 drawbacks to you of not sharing the words ‘I love you’ with them.
Whenever we see more benefits than drawbacks in an outcome, we take action.
Write down all the things you fear may occur if you say ‘I love you’ and then take each item you listed and ask how it will benefit you if it occurs. Every situation has a balance of support and challenge and no matter what happens you will always experience both sides.
Write down 25 benefits to the person hearing you say you love them and 25 drawbacks for that person if you do not tell them. When you perceive more benefits to them of hearing the truth of your heart you will feel inspired to tell them you love them.
In our daily relationships we swing back and forth between like and dislike, attract and repel, yet are these not the two arms walking hand in hand as one in a balanced gait – truthfully called love.

True love is the synthesis and synchronicity of all complementary emotions – a balance between the attractive and repulsive emotional extremes. It is a pure energy that permeates our entire existence. When applied to a romantic or intimate relationship, true love emerges as you come to appreciate both the positive and negative, good and bad, happy and sad and ups and downs of a relationship. You realise that the purpose of a relationship is not only romance, joy, support and so-called happiness; it is also equally about learning, challenge, growth and personal evolution.

True love is our ultimate objective, whether we’re aware of it or not. We may think we’re looking for something else, something material and fleeting, but even the pursuit of transient goals just leads us back to the truth of love. The purpose of all relationships is to dissolve the barriers that keep us from recognising the love that already is and expressing the love we ultimately are.

Love and wisdom,
Dr John Demartini ”

As I said these are his words, and I have not added or subtracted anything from them, but I have sure gained a lot.  Hope you have enjoyed it as much.

yes! You read that right…..I went Wassailing down the Thames on a Sunday afternoon!!  The Twelfth Night of Christmas festivities are held annually on the 6th January, and this year (also the first year) I got to hear about it!
So yesterday (January 6th) was one of the highlights of my London life to date!!  I have lived in this city for 11 years now and it was only 2 weeks ago that I learned about the custom of wassailing.  I received an email from a friend of mine inviting me to join him and his crew on the Trinity Tide as they carried the Holly (Green) Man from St Katherine’s Pier along the Thames to Bankside.    I joined the cutter and crew at the pier at 1.45pm and my excitement knew no bounds; to be a passenger on the Trinity Tide had been a dream of mine since November 2010 when I first saw it in the Lord Mayor’s Show 🙂

My daughter who was to be the official photographer and I set off really early and made our way to Tower Hill…thankfully the trains were running just fine and we made it in good time 🙂    We stopped off at Costa Coffee for a last-minute order (by text…gotta love social mobility) of 5 hot coffees; white please!! 🙂     I was guessing the crew were in need of urgent refreshment after rowing on what was a cold and grey day, from Deptford to Tower Bridge.   Then down to the pier it was…I was still stressing big time about ‘am I in the right place?’ & ‘where were we landing?’ and sent a panic stricken text to Joe to make sure I had the right place. Daft!!!

twelfth night festivities

me on my phone 🙂

When we arrived at the pier, there was no Green Man to be seen; my nerves were skittering about and almost overwhelmed my excitement.  Then suddenly I saw the Trinity Tide as she rounded the bend

and a few seconds later I saw the Green Man making his way down the walkway to the pontoon!! Hooray!! I was in the right place at the right time! This does not happen often 🙂  The Green Man looked absolutely splendid decked out in his greenery and the face painting was extraordinary!   The Holly Man ‘brings in the green’ and ‘wassails’ or toasts the people, the River Thames and the Globe – an old tradition encouraging good growth.

The cutter pulled up alongside the pontoon and quick as a flash before anyone could change their minds I was on and seated.  Try to pry me off now and see how far you get!!! 🙂

Within a very short space of time we were off…..the piper in the bow,

settled in for the trip; the piper in the bow of the Trinity Tide

the oarsman ready to row, the jolly green man standing as we go, one of the Mummers to wave and say hello; wassail the boats, then me in the VIP seat ( 🙂 ) and Joe standing at the stern to guide us safely along the river with nautical expressions like: easy as you go, or keep it even lads and even the odd ‘heave’.

looking ever so tiny against the huge structure of Tower Bridge, the Trinity Tide is on her way

Ohmygosh…what fun!!! I was truly in my element, grinning from ear-to-ear like a cheshire cat.  I could scarcely believe my luck.
What an experience…..I can recommend it to anyone….although I am not sure that you would be able to go in the Trinity Tide, but you can sure take a ferry along the river.  The views of the city are marvellous and although the tide was out and the water so low I could probably have walked along the river (kidding!), it was just amazing to sail beneath the bridges and see the buildings along the embankments from that perspective.

The Cap’n and his crew hailed and cheered the Green Man and the Trinity Tide and even 3 Days in London got 3 cheers….what fun!!
We made exceptionally good time, those blokes sure know how to row….and before we knew it, and way too soon for me, we arrived at Bankside.

the Green man arrives at Bankside…let the festivities begin!!!

And an extra bonus….because we were so early we (the rowers not me!!) rowed almost to Waterloo Bridge and then back down again, all the while the Mummer and Green Man wassailing along the Thames.
We landed safely on the beach (Churchill would have been proud), where we were met by a group of Mummers and others.

The Mummers waiting to greet the Green Man

Quick as a flash the Green Man was gone and I didn’t even have time to say goodbye 🙂  I climbed out the boat with huge reluctance!  The embankment was lined with revellers and spectators there to see the arrival of the Green Man from the Thames, watch the Mummers and join in with the celebrations and Twelfth Night festivities.
Their costumes were just brilliant and the characters enchanting!  I said goodbye to the Trinity Tide and crew and all too soon they made their way back along the Thames to Deptford.

The play was in full swing by the time I found myself a good vantage point and although I could not see very well or hear much of what was going on, the bits that I did get to see and hear were uproariously funny.  At the end of the play, cakes are distributed – a bean and a pea hidden in two of them. Those who find them are hailed King and Queen for the day and crowned with ceremony.  The little cakes were duly handed out and King Bean and Queen Pea were identified, they were crowned and the whole jolly group set off with revellers and spectators trailing behind to the George Inn for the next bit of the tradition.  I ran like mad through the back streets (it’s really useful knowing my way around!) to get to the George Inn before the crowd as I really wanted to record them arriving….which they did with great noise, pomp and ceremony!! What a brilliant experience.

I can highly recommend that you put the 6 January 2015 into your diary and head on over to Bankside for next year’s festivities.  Snippets of information in this blog are from this site; do visit it, it’s brilliant.

According to today’s regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s probably shouldn’t have survived,

This is because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip-flops and fluorescent ‘spokey dokey’s’ on our wheels. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags and riding in the passenger seat was a treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same. We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but we were …never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this.

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded. We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends – we went outside and found them. We played elastics and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt! We fell out of trees, got cut, and broke bones but there were no law suits. We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents.

We played knock-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us. We walked to friends’ homes. We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we didn’t rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls. We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of…they actually sided with the law. This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you’re one of them. Congratulations!

Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.
For those of you who aren’t old enough, thought you might like to read about us. 🙂
